Well, I don’t know about you, but I can’t believe August is here. It seemed as if June and July just flew by, lots of fun activities and good food too.
July started out in Reno at the Shriners Imperial Session. It was great to see Al Kader’s Oriental Band playing for the Opening Session. It was an honor for the Unit to be asked to do this. But the part which sent chills up and down my back was when the Daughters of the Nile Foundation presented the Imperial Potentate with two checks. One from the US Foundation in the amount of $2,150,000 and one from the Canadian Foundation in the amount of $366,000. Ladies we rock!!!
Also at Imperial, Daughters of the Nile had a float in the Imperial Parade. Our own Supreme Princess Royal was in charge of the float. It was great, there were about 50 ladies who participated.
July also started the picnic season. The first picnic was with Dallas Nile Club at Gentle Woods Park in Monmouth. We had chicken, great salads, cake and homemade ice cream and lots of fun visiting with the ladies.
Our next picnic was with Salem Nile Club at Deepwood Estate. A few of the ladies always arrive early so we will have tables under the trees. It was a cool morning and I am sure they were happy when the sun started to heat up the day. We had all the fixins for a great picnic and a BIG chocolate cake, to celebrate Sylvia Rollman’s 93rd birthday in August.
Then there was Three Sisters Nile Club picnic in Redmond. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend. I had a prior commitment to the East West Shrine Football game. I was told the food was great and everyone had a great time. I am planning to have lunch with them later this month.
Speaking of the East West Shriners Football game and activities, it was an interesting trip to Baker City. Roads were being closed, then opened then closed again. But we made it.
On Thursday, the NEON Club brought back a tradition of old. They invited all the visiting Nydia ladies to their club and a lunch of sandwiches, salads and homemade desserts. It was so nice just relaxing and visiting with the ladies we don’t see very often.
Friday was the Football Queen’s and Co-Captains luncheon; Pr. Winnie Carey was in charge of this event. This is when we are introduced to the Patient Ambassadors from the Portland Hospital and hear their stories of how Shriners Children’s has changed their lives for the better. Warms your heart, and reminds us of why we do what we do.
Saturday was the Parade and Game. Pr. Val Stockhoff is so kind, she brought her truck with benches in the back so Nydia Temple could have a float for the Parade. We decorated with our banners
and gold fringe. Pr. Val, Pr. Linda Dick and Linda’s granddaughter gave bubbles to the children along the parade route. At the game, I was introduced as the Queen of Nydia Temple. I am so proud
to represent Daughters of the Nile.
Oh, I can’t forget the Shrine Children’s 100th Anniversary Patient Birthday Party. Our JPQ Donna Gray and her team did a great job decorating and setting up games and activities for the kids to participate in. I had a great time going around and visiting with the patients, their parents and playing the games. It was a great time. Looking forward to next year’s party.
Well, it looks as if August is going to be busy too. Here are a few activities coming up:
